Diane Nemerov nace en el seno de una adinerada familia judía de Nueva York. Es hermana del poeta Howard Nemerov. A los 14 años comienza su relación con Allan Arbus, con quien se casa cumplidos los 18 años. En los años cuarenta, el matrimonio se dedica a la fotografía de moda en revistas como Esquire, Vogue y Harper’s Bazaar. De 1955 a 1957, Diane Arbus toma clases con la fotógrafa austríaca Lisette Model, quien ejerce una gran influencia. En esa época, también, se divorcia de Allan. La década del sesenta fue la más productiva. Recorre los peligrosos barrios de Nueva York para seleccionar a los personajes que retrata, entre los que se encuentran enanos, nudistas y prostitutas. En 1967 realiza la exposición «New Documents», que la da a conocer al público mayoritario. Continua trabajando para revistas importantes retratando a celebridades como Norman Mailer, Mae West y Jorge Luis Borges. En 1971, después de una larga depresión, Diane Arbus se suicida. Un año más tarde su trabajo es seleccionado para participar en la Bienal de Venecia, siendo la primera fotógrafa estadounidense en ser seleccionada, y el MoMA de Nueva York organiza su primera gran retrospectiva.
Influenciada por Model y la película Freaks (La parada de los monstruos o Fenómenos, en castellano) de Tod Browning, Diane Arbus eligió a personas marginales para sus fotografías: gemelos, enfermos mentales, gigantes, familias disfuncionales, fenómenos de circo, etc. Los personajes miraban directamente a la cámara, lo que hace que el flash revele sus defectos. Su intención era producir en el espectador "temor y vergüenza". Fue pionera del flash de relleno (flash de día). La fotografía de Diane representa lo normal como monstruoso: cuando fotografía el dolor, lo encuentra en personas normales. Provoca que la gente presuntamente normal aparezca como anormal. Rompe la composición, sitúa al personaje en el centro. Su mirada siempre es directa, con tensión y fuerza. Para ella no existe el momento decisivo, trabaja en continuo espacio temporal y obliga a los retratados a que sean conscientes de que están siendo retratados. Busca una mirada nueva, pasando del tedio a la fascinación.
