Tengo entre mis manos un libro de los que conmueven, que cuenta historias a traves de magistrales imágenes, que me pone los pelos de punta, ante tanta injusticia repartida por el mundo, ante el sufrimiento de los más débiles por las mentes iluminadas de los poderosos. Vidas minadas, diez años, es un compendio de experiencias vitales, de ganas de vivir encarando el cruel destino que a muchas personas les ha tocado vivir. Desde la perspectiva de nuestra sociedad del primer mundo estamos insensibilizados a lo que ocurre en muchos rincones de nuestra Tierra. Pero Gervasio Sánchez aporta su buen hacer fotográfico para mostrarnos lo que nunca debió haber fotografiado, son fotografías que nunca debieron ser realizadas, pero ya que estos dramas individuales han sucedido, que menos que difundirlos para evitar su repetición.Las minas antipersona están expresamente prohibidas por el Derecho Internacional Humanitario (DIH). Sin embargo la falta de un acuerdo internacional específico sobre esta prohibición ha servido de pretexto para que los países las hayan utilizado abiertamente desde la segunda guerra mundial. En sus inicios fueron empleadas para frenar el avance de tanques y ejércitos enemigos y para proteger determinadas zonas estratégicas. Se hicieron tan populares que su uso y producción se generalizó en todo tipo de conflictos.
Pronto se comprobó la crueldad de estos artefactos: arrojadas desde el aire o sembradas sin control, las minas antipersonas pueden permanecer activas indefinidamente, y cuando estallan, no distinguen entre civiles o combatientes, niños o trabajadores humanitarios. Es justamente esto lo que las hace incompatibles con el DIH, cuya misión es reducir al máximo el sufrimiento humano, limitando el tipo y el uso de las armas en un conflicto para evitar sufrimientos innecesarios, proteger a la población civil, a los prisioneros de guerra y a los combatientes heridos.
Actualmente 151 paises se han adherido al tratado de Ottawa contra las minas antipersonas, todavía 40 paises están fuera del acuerdo, y entre solo cinco paises, entre ellos Estados Unidos, Rusia y China, reunen 160 millones de minas antipersonas.

Gervasio Sánchez, es un fotógrafo nacido en Córdoba en agosto de 1959. Periodista desde 1984, sus trabajos se publican en Heraldo de Aragón y La Vanguardia, además de colaborar con la Cadena Ser y la BBC.
Es autor de varios libros fotográficos: El cerco de Sarajevo (1995) y los publicados por la editorial Blume, Vidas minadas (1997 y 2002), Kosovo, crónica de la deportación (1999), Niños de la guerra (2000), La caravana de la muerte. Las víctimas de Pinochet (2002), Latidos del tiempo(2004), junto al escultor y artísta plástico Ricardo Calero, y Sierra Leona, guerra y paz (2005).
Coordinó en 2001 junto a Manuel Leguineche el libro Los ojos de la guerra (Homenaje a Miguel Gil) y en 2004 publicó el libro literario Salvar a los niños soldados.
Ha recibido los premios Cirilo Rodríguez, Club Internacional de Prensa, Andalucía de Cultura, Derechos Humanos de Periodismo, Liber Press, Javier Bueno. Las instituciones aragonesas le han concedido la Medalla de Oro de Santa Isabel de Portugal y la Medalla al Mérito Profesional, además de nombrarle hijo adoptivo de Zaragoza. Es enviado especial por la paz de la UNESCO desde 1998.
